Over the last forty years computers have developed dramatically. They have become smaller and cheaper, and more and more powerful. The first computers could do relatively few calculations a second, whereas the present main frame can carry out millions of instructions each second. In the past only highly trained computer experts were able to use computers. But, as they become cheaper and smaller and easier to operate, many people such as doctors, teachers, librarians, architects, artists and even persons at home are now finding that a computer can help them. These trends will, probably, continue in the future, too.

Future Computer
The possible development of computers in the future might be on these lines. The time may come when owning a computer will be as common as owning a wrist watch. In future houses may be erected with built-in computers controlling everything from paying bills to opening doors and regulating the entry of people. Computer functioning on the basis of sensors of different kinds and executing the wide variety of tasks will be a common feature of the times to come. For example, they may control all lights in the house by switching them on and off as people enter or get out of the rooms. They may control heating, air-conditioning, opening windows etc, with the help of electronic signals. Automatic plant watering systems, based on humidity sensor and machines, taking messages and replying in human voices, using speech synthesizers are among the amazing possibilities in the future.
